Netflix Inspiration: Bringing Car Restoration Shows to Small Town Bike Shop Video Creation!

Most people would not know this about me, but I am a closet fan of Car Restoration shows on Netflix. I have never in my life built or restored a car. I only know how to change the tires, change the air filters, put air in the tires, check the oil, put gas in the tank, and start the engine. Every simple task of a car, I got!

But restoring a car… No!

But taking a car apart and putting it back together… No!

But knowing every piece, wire, or piping in or under a car… NOPE!

So why in the world like that type of show?

The truth is… I have no idea. It all started with watching Mike Hall and Avery Shoaf in “Rust Valley Restorers.” A show that is based in a community in Canada called Rust Valley, where the car community for classic cars is rampant. Their passion and knowledge for cars drove even the non-car enthusiast to watch regularly.

Then I dove into “Car Masters: Rust to Riches,” which is a show about a car restoration garage in California called Gotham Garage. This show features a slew of cast with talents that are beyond my imagination. But it starts with the owner of the shop… Mark Towle. His imagination and drive to make a rusty, not working, thousand-dollar piece of junk into a beautiful, futuristic, working, and running piece of automotive art. It is UNREAL to watch.

And that is where my inspiration came from when I walked into Velocity Multi-Sport & Cycling…

Before I started this business in Wisconsin, I walked into Velocity Multi-Sport & Cycling with my father, who is good friends with the owner, to say… “Hey, Scott! (the owner) You should make a YouTube channel of building bikes.” We didn’t have a relationship, like him and my father or like we do now, so a completely puzzled and confused look came on his face.

I remember that moment to this day. Not because right after the puzzled blank stare look, he never responded. Completely ignoring everything I said. But because… I saw the knowledge and wisdom that he was pouring out to my father as he was struggling to fix something on his bike. That same knowledge and wisdom I saw in all of the car restoration shows I watch from start to finish regularly. I knew what COULD BE… if he just saw what I saw!

Once I officially said, “Wisconsin is where Gavin (Bison) Videos will be!” is when I knew… He was going to be my FIRST CLIENT!

After a couple of weeks or months, the conversation was brought up. But this time it was Scott to brought it up. (And no, I did not give him the same dumb-founded look! LOL!) I jumped at the opportunity because I knew that I could be the vision of what I saw in all those Car Restorations Shows come to life in a Small Town Bike Shop in Wisconsin.

The first video was the perfect opportunity to accomplish that too. Scott wanted to show the process of getting a bike fitted properly for the rider using Retul Technologies. During the production of this video and post-production, I was validated in my vision of seeing the passion, humor, and knowledge being seen by the human eye. But now… it will be seen on the phones and TVs of the consumer. The passion is seen with every sentence that is uttered or expression that Scott gives. The humor was seen in the first three seconds when Scott and I engaged in sarcastic banter to get a reaction from the teenage Velocirider that the bike was getting fitted for in the video. Lastly, the knowledge, just listen because in post-production I could not edit the video shorter due to all the education taking place.

Before we started filming, I told Scott one thing… “Say what you're doing, WHILE you do it!” Because I expected that he was going to do the task, and not explain it. Instead… my expectations got blown away!

The second video that Velocity Multi-Sport & Cycling shot was about Scott building DT Swiss wheels. This is a task that Scott loves to do and is therapy for him. If you do know anything about bike wheel building, just know it is a long process. The process is long, but not because of a ton of steps. It is long due to three steps that take time, and checking/rechecking.

After finishing up filming, I saw just that. The process was three steps, so that means I filmed more B-Roll than educational pieces. I was WRONG. Remember above when I stated my expectations were blown away… This is why. Scott does an AMAZING job of explaining, educating, and going into depth about every step involved. The SAME thing I saw in all those Car Restoration Shows. This GREAT issue has led to the first two videos being longer than expected, but not too long for the viewers.

Why are you saying all this…??

All of those GREAT issues led to GREAT outcomes for views on the Velocity Multi-Sport & Cycling YouTube channel. Mr. Beast, a YouTube billionaire, has stated several times on Podcasts… “Your first videos will not get ANY views.” But these two videos have garnered 100 Views total… and GROWING!

But that is NOT the “Cherry on Top!”... THIS WAS!

Many videographers or creative companies have an ego about them. They do not want to hear about your ideas, or what you would like to see. Why? Because they were hired to be the Creative and they want to create. But that is NOT us.

Scott sent us a hilarious idea for an Instagram Reel, and we agreed. It was GREAT! I worked with Velocity Multi-Sport & Cycling to set a time and get people in place. Then we filmed. But what happened next was… EXHILARATING! Velocity posted the finished product on Instagram to garner 1,710 views with 11 shares. Then they posted it on Youtube, as a Youtube Short, to garner… 10K VIEWS!!!

A small town bike shop in Wisconsin getting views that they have NEVER seen is not because of us. This is because of the amazing passionate people that are in the videos. A great videographer does not make it about them. It is the one that makes it about the individuals that the lens is pointed at. Being a video company to Gavin (Bison) Videos is not about us, it is fully about what our Clients accomplish.

Did we have a vision that would compare to what Velocity Multi-Sport & Cycling wanted… YES!

If I had not watched those Car Restoration Shows, would I have seen a vision for the YouTube channel… MAYBE!

Is it only because Gavin (Bison) Videos is the BEST Video Company in Wisconsin… NOT AT ALL!

It is because the same thing we see while filming captivates us while watching… OUR CLIENTS!
